Avant l'arrivée des Portugais, à la fin du 15e siècle, l'ancien royaume du Congo, dont la formation territoriale est succinctement retracée, vivait avec des institutions religieuses, politiques, sociales, économiques, figées dans une longue tradition. En apportant leurs marchandises et le christianisme, les premiers Européens lançaient un défi qui se termina par la victoire des colons portugais de l'Angola en 1665. Mais le succès militaire ne fut pas accompagné d'un succès politico-culturel ; pire encore, la christianisation limitée à une étroite caste dirigeante fut compensée par une déstructuration rapide et désastreuse du pays. Secouant l'hégémonie de l'ancienne capitale, les marges maritimes se détachèrent et se constituérent en États courtiers, indépendants, tandis que, de leur enclave angolaise, les Portugais accaparaient les ressources du Congo intérieur. Vansina's case study of the colonial experience is the realm of Kuba, a kingdom in Congo about the size of New Jersey--and two-thirds the size of its colonial master, Belgium. The experience of its inhabitants is the story of colonialism, from its earliest manifestations to its tumultuous end. What happened in Kuba happened to varying degrees throughout Africa and other colonized regions: racism, economic exploitation, indirect rule, Christian conversion, modernization, disease and healing, and transformations in gender relations.
